From the series: Reflections of Time, this work is intrinsically connected to music. Music is the language of humanity. It captures deep emotion and gives it structure. The monotype, a unique image in itself, is created like music, within a structure, using color and light, line and shadow, motion through space, and precision and suggestion. An exploration of the method of absence, this is a gentle song to embrace and let linger in the memory. Printed on nearly transparent yet robust Japanese rice paper, the image is archival mounted and professionally framed with museum quality cleats for installing.

Born in New York, raised in Rome, Bogotá and New York, my work has been defined by more than one language, more than one culture, and more than one history. As an artist my process is focused on elucidating the relation of the individual to the environment. This constant connection functions on many different layers including a perception, an understanding and the feeling that always accompanies knowledge. I work in luminography, a technique I developed in the darkroom using the photogram as a point of departure, and which has allowed me to explore the behavior of light as color and as signifier. Color is a direct connector to emotion, and the process carried out in absolute darkness allows a sublimation of intent and a focus on the creation of meaning. I also work in paint, approaching the tradition in a similar way, constructing levels of meaning with color, form and gesture. These works demand a different type of focus and precise execution. I have several projects under way including a tome on the technique of luminography, various graphic projects, and the creation of a cultural strategy arena. While varied they all come from the belief that our most important ability is to create, to build, and to communicate. My work is included in several public and private collections in the US, Europe, and South America. Reviewed in The New York Times https://nyti.ms/2ritpJD
