I spent many years during my 20s and early 30s traveling throughout West Africa studying percussion. This self portrait combines elements from my adventures; Baobab tress, an African sunrise, cowry shells (which I have tattooed on my left arm) and a goat skeleton with the text “The Butcher’s Dance.” The Butcher’s Dance was a particularly challenging piece of music I was struggling to learn for weeks in the north of Ghana. The composition’s name and dream-like form are taken from the anti-malarial drug Mefloquin which gives one vivid and bizarre dreams.
