My name is Vladimír Brunton, and I am an artistic photographer dedicated to the meticulous craft of combining traditional photographic techniques with painting-like textures. I am among the few photographers globally who specialize in the precise art of applying liquid silver gelatin directly onto canvas or my own handcrafted Japanese paper. Once applied, I expose this sensitive medium to light, producing unique, original photographs. My ambition transcends mere imagery—I strive to create distinctive “photographic paintings,” artefacts merging the authenticity of photography with the rich, tangible textures reminiscent of painting. Each piece I produce is a singular original, rooted deeply in a respect for traditional craftsmanship and artistic heritage. My creative journey is profoundly influenced by my grandfather’s legacy and further inspired by renowned Czech masters such as František Drtikol and Josef Sudek, whose profound understanding of light, composition, and materials guides my artistic pursuit. Thematically, my works reflect a diverse spectrum of inspirations. Initially sparked by my extensive travels—through Cuba, Venezuela, Iceland, Israel, India, and Africa—my early exhibitions captured the essence of these vibrant locations. Over time, however, my focus shifted profoundly toward intimate studio creations, particularly in portraiture. I have had the privilege of photographing numerous prominent figures within Czech cultural life, including the acclaimed film director Miloš Forman. Alongside portraits, my studio work encompasses a sensitive and nuanced series of artistic nudes. Driven by constant exploration and experimentation, I developed a unique technique I call “oilography,” translating my photographic visions into vibrant, painterly interpretations using oil paints, often applied on Japanese Washi handmade paper. Some of these pieces are innovatively illuminated from behind with LED lights, lending them an ethereal, almost otherworldly dimension. Throughout my practice, I emphasize exceptional technical quality, artistic originality, and lasting durability. My core belief is that photography extends beyond the visual—it can become an object imbued with its own narrative and soulful presence, enduring through generations. Thank you for exploring my work.
