Something about being in nature settles my soul. And looking up through trees into the vast sky gives me new perspective. Both the song "Standing Tall" by Michael Kiwanuka and the poem "To Live in the Mercy of God" by Denise Levertov helped inspire this piece. Lines that stand out from them are Levertov's, "To lie back under the tallest oldest trees. How Far the stems rise, rise..." and Kiwanuka's, "Then we'll be waving hands singing freely Singing standing tall it's now coming easy Oh no more looking down honey Can't you see? Oh Lord, I'm getting ready to believe." The trees and sky represent that settled feeling of looking up, but the movement in the pictures represents the real life stuff that makes truth and security seem blurry at times. This piece represents my longing for "standing tall" to come easy in the midst of life's hard stuff. It was created through a paper lithography process using a zerox transfer to achieve the initial black and white image. I used oil paint and water soluble pencils to add color and work into the image. The actual image is 8x10.5 The listed size represents the image, edge and matt.

I enjoy creating through drawing, printmaking and oil painting. My work grows out of my experiences and is often about issues I am dealing with or about experiences I have had. Most recently, I’m enjoying finishing a series of prints/ mixed media pieces about “Becoming.” This series explores the process of dealing with life’s hard stuff and finding joy and hope in its midst.
