In this work I have depicted a typical slave ship taking on enslaved Africans from West Africa. In the background is a 17th century map showing the West coast of Africa the Atlantic ocean and part of South America and the Caribbean where the iniquitous triangular Atlantic slave trade took place. The map has been etched and then hand colored in classic style. The ship is a monoprint, pasted (using chine colle technique) onto the etched map.

I work mainly in the media of printmaking and sculpture. When making prints my preference is for hard ground etchings, drypoint or relief prints. Sculpturally I work with bronze, glass and various metals, often combining them in a single artwork. I was formerly a Mathematics lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand for thirty years. Drawing on my expertise in mathematics, I helped to create a popular interest and involvement in mathematics by elucidating the nexus between mathematics and traditional African craft objects, and has been involved in the production of numerous articles, books, TV documentaries, videos and DVDs relating to that topic. I was the mathematician involved in the development of the series Africa meets Africa ().
