About The Artwork

21st Century Man When I was a kid, “21st Century” was an epithet used to evoke visions of an advanced society, and the 21st Century itself was thought of as though it would be an almost magical era of accelerating progress in society, science, and technology. It would be the logical continuation of the developments made in the twentieth century that witnessed the journey from world wars, devastating disease, and horse drawn wagons, to space flight and unimagined advances in science, medicine, and social order that promised to make all our lives better. We had the intelligence, the tools, and the momentum to soar, yet not the will, not the maturity. Now that we’ve seen what we have to offer in the 21st century, it seems that only selfishness, superstition, and hatred define us. Life has become a game that is won or lost; not something that everyone is entitled to. We’ve forgotten our humanity, and no longer have a grasp of the political, moral, and ethical imperatives needed to guide ourselves anymore. We’ve broken our promise, and this is a reminder of that break, of what we’ve forgotten, of all that we’ve left behind, and of all the peoples, creatures, and environments that pay the price for our selfishness. But it should also serve as a reminder of the lives we could make possible for everyone and everything, if only we wanted to. This sculpture is cold cast iron with a concrete base and will be cast by me as ordered, in an edition of not more than 100. Please keep in mind that this is a labor intensive and lengthy process. Allow 6 to 12 weeks to ship. I will keep you posted on its progress. Cold cast metal is a process where a fine metallic powder, iron powder in this case, is mixed with resin and cast in a silicone mold. This eliminates the need for a foundry and allows me to compete each step of the process myself, giving me total control of the final piece.

"The universal need for art...is man's rational need to lift the inner and outer world into his spiritual consciousness as an object in which he recognizes again his own self" -Hegel Leonardo wrote that a figure is worthy if it shows the passion of it's mind, and although he also said a woman should be painted with her knees pressed tightly together, the thought about passion is apt as far as my approach to figurative art is concerned‚ the thing about the knees very much less so. The paintings presented here are meant to speak of what it is to be human, images where we recognize again, our selves; an exploration of a journey of the psyche, and the interplay between persona and vulnerability. The series, inspired by a poem 'when you look at something you've lost, you see a part of yourself that has become permanent', is a document of my journey through the fragility and fragmentation of the psyche, love, loss, vulnerability, anguish, and the fleeting, subtle, and sometimes indistinguishable differences between all of these things. These paintings are like poems themselves. Their essential character should not be expected to be easy or literal, but rather have elements of the fictive and ulterior, and perhaps become somewhat difficult. To inspire and engage our thoughts, allusive and indirect images can coax our more complex thoughts and emotions into meaning, even without language, as in these paintings. Their essence, and purpose, is not necessarily to convey specific ideas or feelings but to create an environment of images that enable a tacit expression of the conflict, tensions, and substance of the visual experience. Titles and simple explanations, and statements for that matter, take the poetic experience away from the visual. They confine us and make us lazy. As such, each image is meant to be a subtle reminder of an indeterminate moment in our thoughts. It may be one of pleasure or pain, love or loss, but is most likely all of them at once because that's who we are. Nothing can be lost until it has been found, and nothing is permanent until it has been lost. Contact the artist for more details.
