About The Artwork

Just finished another sculpture for the Aves and the World show ( in association with the Trinity River Audubon Center) opening June 4th at TWU. A facility created as a healing center for the illegal dumping ground in Pleasant Grove, the center terraformed the land, covering much of the waste and building methane vents to ensure safety from eruptions. The area has since been turned into a nature sanctuary. The premise behind this piece is to address a few characteristics of the situation surrounding the facility's existence: 1) to address the focus of Audubon on ornithology, I opted to work with nest-like structures, 2) the illegal dumping ground existed for 15 years, one nest for each year, 3) the political and social injustice the community suffered throughout the dumping grounds existence is addressed through the color scheme and internal structures of the nests-neutral toned exterior symbolizes the neutrality of being human, the human race. In the center is an abstraction of an eye cloaked in white, symbolic of the white community, though fully aware, turned a blind eye to the situation. The middle layer, full of roots and tightly woven black fibers symbolizes the black community's dedication and roots to the location. The black layer is also growing up and over the "blind eye" representing the community's growth up and victory over the oppressive force.

email is sdtompkins at live.com IG is stacytompkinsart I have work available in every price point Two-dimensional work: Inspired by microscopy images, themes of spiritual energy and hidden knowledge, my work explores the invisible realms in which we are enveloped, but rarely acknowledge. Sculpture: My mixed media sculptures focus on the psyche, ritual and meaning-making. The works deconstruct the transcultural aspects of ritual, sacred tool/ ritual object evolution, and the role biology plays in the archetypal development of deities. The pieces raise questions surrounding the origins of belief and spiritual identity.
