About The Artwork

This most recent edition of 'A Wise Woman Once Said...' is unique and made of Hydrocal, which is like casting plaster but 30% to 40% harder. It is lightweight and very durable allowing it to be a good alternative to bronze. Here I have used a three-step patina in layers of acrylic paint in gold, burnt umber, and warm white with gold, to create a stone-like finish in light taupe grey. The work is then waxed and buffed. The bronze version of this sculpture along with two others was featured in American Art Collector Magazine in the December 2019 editorial Destination Canada This sculpture reflects serenity and wisdom. A beautiful piece that invites touch, she can be displayed in a variety of angles (front, side, or back) Classically trained as a figurative painter, I was inspired to create this piece directly from the model with full completion later in the studio. This piece is signed on the bottom, please see the image She may be affixed to a base if desired, however, I prefer her to stand alone as shown. Thank you for your interest in my work!

Born in Montreal, Quebec, Joyce is an internationally collected Multidisciplinary Painter and Sculptor living and working in Toronto. While her main focus is Abstract Expressionist painting, she also has a passion for sculpting and drawing the human form for which she was academically trained. Over the last twelve years, Joyce has exhibited in solo and group shows within Canada and internationally. Featured on several occasions in American Art Collector magazine since 2009, her work is found in private and public collections in Canada, the USA, and Europe. STATEMENT "My paintings are Abstract Expressionist and entirely conceptual. They are bold and passionate created with conviction in response to a specific emotion or state of being. Working medium to large in size I start by randomly applying heavy-bodied Gesso to the canvas to create a geometric design. I then use this design as a template for acrylic paint application. I rarely use colour directly from the tube and prefer instead to mix my own. I feel this lends an intimacy to the work. Using large brushes and/or palette knives I allow some paint to drip while scraping out various areas to reveal the underpainting. My goal is to say as much as possible without having a big discussion. I want people to see what uniquely speaks to them, depending on their own situation. People see different things in my work. Movement, Colour, and Passion are words I often hear people use when they speak about my work. I have been most influenced by the great Abstract Expressionists of post-World War II America. Specifically, I feel my work most resembles what one would see if Robert Motherwell, Franz Kline, and Hans Hofmann had collaborated to paint something together."
