About The Artwork

The air dried yellow cedar finishes without surface treatment to a white-yellow. This lightness of colour contributes to the feeling of purity and refinement. The subtle grain pattern seems to sit behind the surface of form and colour as it humbly emerges from the depth of the material. The 8th of the "Parallel Forces" series, this vertical piece takes the eye for a winding ride up, down and around the form, inviting the viewer to sweep its interjoining compound surfaces with an investigating eye and a listening hand. The shape is roughed out with handsaws and a drawknife while the work piece is clamped to the bench. When the piece is no longer square and clampable, knives and gouges are then used with the piece held in the lap. As the form approaches finalization, the knives are honed to remove any nicks and paying careful attention to grain orientation, the final cuts are made. Once the shape is complete, the sanding commences and the polish is taken to 320 grit and beyond. It may be interesting to note that, especially in the case of this particular form, the fine tuning of the form and the polishing run parallel to each other and synchronistically all the way until the very end of the sanding process. In other words, while I was polishing the piece to remove scratch marks at the very end of the process, I was still making the very subtle final adjustments in form to refine the interjoining compound curves. ------------------------------------------------------------- *There is some small checking at the top of the piece as seen in photograph (a horizontal ragged pattern check and a very slim vertical linear check to the right of horizontal one). When dusting, wipe the top area where the checking is in an upward direction. A downward direction may catch the cloth and cause tear-out. The sculpture is signed with the year on the bottom with a pyrography tool.
