About The Artwork

Formally, the Mystery of Space series explores piercings, flowing edges with varied widths, depth/concavity, and strong outer/inner relationships. No.2 uses yellow cedar, laminated to form the carving block. The surface is left natural and bare, and great care was taken to smooth the piece with gradually finer grit abrasive. The fine growth rings add an intriguing pattern to the surface along with the natural colourations which emerged as I carved. Conceptually, I am influenced by quantum mechanics and relativity in establishing an abstracted view of space. When looked at through these theories metaphysical questions arise about reality. The following poem is loosely related to the concept and sprung to my head immediately after I developed the sketch for this form. The Guest ____________ The guest arrives uninvited, Infiltrating home, time, space; I watch them but no answers arise, I am taken for a roller coaster ride. The fridge, oven and cabinets open— The guest is fed and leaves swiftly. What is mine, what is their's Who arrived and who departed? What am I?— A guest in my home. ~Mike Sasaki 2019
