ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This listing is for one Classic Ceramic Kitsune Fox Sculpture. I wanted to make a fox similar to the one's which are seen so prevalently in the Kitsune and Inari shrines. This kitsune is very special. He has been fired with Managanese and Chrome Oxides in a Raku style. Then after he has been glazed with a 22k Real Gold Luster. He sits on a gorgeous raku white crackle base. I modelled after shrine foxes that are available at various Kitsunes Fox Shrines throughout Japan. In Japanese culture foxes have a great deal of Mythology associated with them. I feel foxes are mystical creatures. Many of the shrines in Japan are devoted to Kitsune, a fox spirit. Kitsune means fox in the Japanese language. Kitsune is a representative of the god Inari, who is the god of Rice and the harvest. Since foxes are often seen at the rice harvest time hunting for mice, hence they have become a symbol of fertility. They are seen as a helper spirit, hence their connection with the Rice Harvest. Foxes have always occupied a special place in Japanese mythology. Often fox spirits are seen as a sort of shape-shifter, with the power to take human form. There exists many Japanese folk tales and legends in which a fox inhabits a human form. Sometimes portrayed as a Trickster, Kitsune are also depicted as faithful guardians, lovers, spouses and friends. In Japan, Kitsune is the Guardian of the deity, Inari, a Shinto kami. Inari is considered the Harvest god, and hence the god of Fertility. Inari foxes are called Zenko, and are benevolent and helping deities. The more tails a Kitunse has, the more spiritual power it has acquired. A Kitsune may acquire up to 9 tails.

I am a multi-disciplinary artist based in Sitges, Spain, near to Barcelona. I create paintings, ceramic sculptures and fiber art. I started my art career as a street artist as a teenager. I loved the dynamism of graffiti, the rebellion and expression. I filled my portfolio with pictures of my murals, and got myself into Art School, Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver. Art school introduced me to many new ideas. Although I majored in Sculpure, I found myself leaning towards Paintings, and finally I started experimenting with Installation and Public Intervention. I travelled to India and Thailand. This changed things. I wanted to make political art, or do projects which helped people. Later I moved to the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design where I was introduced to Conceptual Art. I have exhibited in Tokyo, Japan, Toronto and Barcelona. The last few years I have focused on Fiber- Art installations and Raku Ceramic Sculpture. Now after several years hiatus, I am back to making Paintings. I found making abstract paintings very liberating. I love it!
