ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I typically have a number of ideas or themes in mind that I wish to influence and shape the work. These themes become a kind of "terrain" or context from which I can formally develop a complete art piece. With "Arc Kernel", the main themes include celestial phenomena, orbits as represented by the circles, elemental forces and the use of the Golden Section as a proportional system. There is a strong connection to the tradition in ancient civilizations of incorporating relief sculpture in architecture and stele as a means of pre-literate communication. Fourteen individually hung panels are created using an "earth-forming" technique, a one-off casting method developed by the artist. A dis-solvable "form work" is carved from silt and filled with liquid clay. Over a period of weeks, the silt & clay matrix dries and disintegrates, allowing the hardened clay within to be excavated. Glazed and fired with colored terra sigillata. Due to the nature of this process, slight variations occur between each composition. Panels are ready to hang; a full-sized paper pattern is included for easy and accurate installation. Suitable for indoor or outdoor display. Limited edition of 20.

I chanced upon the work of Antoni Gaudi while immersed in my architecture degree program, and was smitten with the sculptural joy revealed. Iconoclastic work that reveled in the visceral and tactile world of pattern and biomorphic form while rooted in a thoroughly tectonic sense of architecture. I was hooked and ultimately embarked on a life long exploration of this aesthetic. Paolo Soleri and his architectural project Arcosanti was to provide a similar vein as I spent five years immersed in this urban laboratory where raw ideas grappled with the realities of built architecture. I became infatuated with material and process; both with concrete, the primary building material of the project, and clay, through the on site ceramic production studio. Here I was introduced to the spontaneous and raw casting techniques Soleri utilized incorporating silt, concrete and clay, producing artifacts and surfaces of rustic beauty. I would later find a nurturing environment while earning an MFA at RISD and achieved breakthroughs working with clay and earthen mixtures, leading to my current body of work. I now reside in Roanoke, Virginia, nestled within the phenomenal beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
