ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Inspired by the Mark V diving helmet. Imagine being tethered to a surface lifeline, venturing into darkness with only this metal bubble for air and a porthole view of the unknown. Precursors were clunky and restrictive, but the Mark V offered unprecedented freedom. Its segmented design and adjustable exhaust valve allowed divers to work deeper (up to 180 feet!) and longer. Communication lines crackled with muffled instructions, while weighted suits and lead-soled boots battled the ocean's pull. More than just equipment, the Mark V was a symbol of human courage. It saw divers perform daring rescues, salvage shipwrecks, and lay underwater cables, pushing the boundaries of human endurance. The Mark V remains a testament to the pioneering spirit that dared to explore the ocean's depths.

Hailing from the rugged Oregon coast, Gray brings a touch of the Pacific Northwest's raw beauty to his current home in Georgia, infusing each piece with a unique sense of place and story. Gray's artistic journey began on the vibrant gallery scene of Oregon and Washington, where his work quickly gained recognition. Sales at prestigious venues like the Art Colony at Tubac, AZ, and Kayenta Art Village in Ivins, UT, solidified his reputation as an emerging talent. His artistic prowess has been lauded with numerous awards, culminating in the distinction of being the highest-grossing artist for the Brian Scott Gallery, a premier gallery, in Brookings, Oregon, in 2017. Gray's signature style, "Sculpturning," elevates segmented woodturning to a new level of artistic expression. By meticulously refining and reassembling simple forms, Gray breathes life into reclaimed wood, transforming it into intricate sculptures that echo the essence of nature. While Gray has created traditional bowls and vases, his true passion lies in disparate forms, such as a limited series inspired by antique diving helmets, bells inspired by early America, as well as forms that explore social commentary. These captivating works, which have graced the pages of print and virtual magazines, are evocative windows into a world of mystery and imagination. Gray's commitment to sharing his craft extends beyond the studio. He has conducted demonstrations at the Brian Scott Gallery's "Artistic License" event and held the esteemed title of Artist of the Month at the Chetco Public Library. Notably, his exhibition "A segment of Art" was showcased by the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts in 2021, further solidifying his position as a leading voice in contemporary woodturning. Gray's work is a testament to the transformative power of artistic vision. By meticulously reimagining natural materials, he crafts mesmerizing sculptures that resonate with a timeless elegance. Whether adorning a private collection, a yacht, or gracing a gallery wall, each piece whispers of the artist's deep connection to nature and his unwavering passion for pushing the boundaries of his craft.
