Sculpture: Wood, Paint, Lacquer, Stain on Wood.
With Bar Cabinet, I started playing with the idea of a sculpture with a hidden purpose, or a piece of furniture that would also be a work of art. My architecturally-balanced paintings and sculptures are founded on geometric forms. I began by working with different shapes of wood, playing them off of each other, and connecting them, like puzzle pieces. For the base, it was important to have a slender, yet strong structure, that would lend elegance and height to the cabinet above. Staining and lacquering techniques give the completed sculpture a unified and elegant look.
I wanted to make something that would have a hidden function; that would connect it to the person who bought it. The hidden function creates a private connection to the piece - you can choose to share it or keep it a secret; a visitor would never know - it could appear simply as a sculpture.
