ABOUT THE ARTWORK

1950's Hubley Kiddie Toy Fire Engine, doll parts, Ben-Hur Thyme tin, miniature beverages, toy dinosaur, vacuum tube, copper coil, 1956 Texas mini license plate, tiny people. While Ben appears to have started his journey through time in Scandinavia in the 9th or 10th century, it is obvious that he has visited numerous other periods, including going as far back as 150 million years ago to adopt his pet Apatosaurus and clearly spent some time in Texas in the 1950’s where here picked up his converted fire engine, as well as several additional passengers, and made a stop in 1968 to cast his ballot for Richard Nixon. It appears that he also has gone into the future, as he was able to retrofit his truck with a copper-nitrogen fuel source, which wasn’t invented until 2036, and now is back in 2024, enjoying a beer, while his little friends share a giant Starbucks latte.

David Joseph is an artist, physician, engineer and inventor who lives on Martha’s Vineyard and in Naples, Florida. As an artist, David’s primary media are found object art and photography. An avid international traveler, he has visited over 120 countries on all seven continents, all 50 states, and over 250 UNESCO world heritage sites, each destination an opportunity to photograph nature, wildlife, and portraits. Unable to travel during Covid, David saw the potential to create art from the mundanity around him. He began to create found object sculptures made of old or used common household items, toys, and sports equipment. Each whimsical, thought-provoking piece displays the balanced composition of a trained artist and the skilled construction of an engineer.
