A very important part of the bas relief process is selecting your flowers and plants and preparing them for use. Once this is done, the clay is rolled out and the flowers are gently pressed into the clay. They are then carefully removed and the clay is made into a mold that will hold the plaster casting.
The remains of the mold for this casting can be seen on the left and the piece on the right is the plaster artwork. From this point, the artwork needs to be cleaned, dried and finished.
A display of multiple bas relief artworks.

About The Artwork

Part of my new Hazelnut Collection, I've combined a Gerbera Daisy, Purple Speedwell and Billy Buttons Flowers to create my latest flower fossil artwork. I have included photos that show some of the detailed process of botanical bas relief. This plaster artwork is as always, one of a kind. All of my works are originals, no duplicates. The completed ceramic tile has been finished with a matte sealant. Enjoy!! The artwork comes with a nail hole in the back that will accommodate a small nail. This piece of art is signed by me on the back Copyright Ruth Welter 2022 **Please Note** - This piece of artwork is meant to be hung or displayed indoors. As these pieces are not kiln fired ceramics, they cannot be used in showers or as kitchen back splashes. To clean, use a feather duster or dry soft cloth. All the botanical bas relief pieces I create are made one at a time, by me, all by hand. For this reason, please understand that sizes and shapes will vary slightly. Each is unique and one of a kind.

I'm an avid gardener and also a nature artist. My love of gardening has always fueled my desire to create and vise versa. When creating relief artwork, I love the connection that I have to nature and the plants and flowers that I am using. Growing, cutting and preparing the flowers for the relief process right through to casting, painting and finishing each piece, brings me great happiness. The process of botanical bas relief has many steps and starts with real flowers that are arranged and pressed into clay that has been rolled flat. The clay is used to create a mold and plaster is poured into that mold to create the beautiful relief design you see. Removing the artwork from the mold, the piece is left to dry for a week. When dry, the plaster becomes white in color. The relief work is then sanded and sprayed with a matte varnish. Each piece of art is hand painted by me, using professional acrylic or watercolor paints to create a beautiful work of art, while other pieces are left unpainted to focus on the natural color of the plaster. For inside display only. I hope you will enjoy my artwork.
