ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I was born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas sculpting in stainless steel since 2002. After studying Fine Art at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, I began a career combining water fountains and outdoor sculpture into the landscaped environment. I currently have a studio home in Scottsdale, AZ while also living part-time in Grand Rapids, Michigan where I maintain a studio and my own gallery. I work primarily in Type-316L non-corrosive stainless steel with its enduring properties. I started working with aluminum and bronze early in my career, but I really like the reflective qualities of high-grade stainless steel. The finish is highly polished to create a contrast between existence and illusion as my main concept is the reflection of the outside world on the artwork. My creative process starts from a blank canvas in my brain with an idea that is captured in a 2-D sketch, then transferred to stainless steel to be cut and sometimes it is also free-form. This is transformed during fabrication/creation process by pushing limits of tension and twist in the form. Sometimes this changes quite a bit from the original concept and other forms may be added; thus, making for an organic composition. The techniques employed in the creation include forming the sculptural shape by tacking the sheet using clamps and tools to weld the forms. All joints are fully welded to maximize strength before grinding and sanding. While it is labor intensive, to polish sculptures in mirror-finish, it ensures the reflective surface will withstand both external and internal elements. It also help enhance the implied motion of the sculpture forms. Although, I can do different finishes as my collectors wishes, simplicity and importance of life is what I am encouraging through the reflections of sculpture with its minimalistic qualities.
