In FROM THE EARTH it’s a quick turn from the spiral of awareness to a knowing wink ~ a mirthful understanding of who we are and of acceptance. Leaves predict the promise of spring and they acknowledge The Fall. They insinuate growth and they grant fertility. And in the Chinese tradition they represent all the beings in the universe. Wow. Turn these leaves to derive your own meaning. And below is the fast-running river of change strengthened by the Chinese character for grace and gratitude. Which happens to match the small ink on my arm, there to remind me every day. Finally, there is the handmade glass sphere created especially for this piece. The earth with its swirling oceans which we must promise to protect. Will we? ====== From the building of cairns to carving rocks, we have left a mark. My new works explore mankind’s evolution as artists through the signs and symbols left behind. Many have acquired properties of magic and mysticism, others animate emotions, hopes and fears. Through symbols I look at Nature, at history, philosophy, meanings and metaphors. Each Story Traveler is a semiotic adventure, designed to discover a context, spark an inspiration, create a conversation through familiar symbols and visual tokens, images as diverse as the promise of the olive branch and the pottery of the Anasazi. Hand-applied patinas highlight each work, through seven layers of rich bronze. Bronze, for its meaningful link to history in art connected mechanically for the machinery of life.

William Freer is a New Mexico artist whose work resonates with collectors nationwide. In his gallery and commissioned work, Bill focuses on the drama of lights and darks, creating pure designs that convey the power of the shadow. Re-imagining scenes from nature, from native symbols, from architectural details and art motifs, he carves through layers of paper or steel, always allowing the shadows to tell the story. As light shifts throughout the day, new moods emerge adding subtle movement. His paper sculpture is an oasis of calm and precision, a place of contemplation to collectors. And his steel work is the yang to paper’s yin, where collectors feel the voice of energy, strength and power. Drama springs from many joined layers that make shadows deep and alluring, while rich patinas, a colorful splash of glass and 360-degree rotation add surprise and excitement. He’s happiest when viewers touch and turn his work, feeling its surfaces, experiencing its spirit. With a keen understanding of both the public and private space, his works in paper and in steel appear in individual, corporate and public collections nationwide. He also partners with celebrated public artist Howard Meehan. Bill's recent public art installation (a kinetic work in steel and glass) was purchased by Western New Mexico University. A multi-media artist, Bill is equally at home with computer design programs, CNC equipment and a hammer.
