Rush to Relics Series are deconstructions and manipulation of the American flag with the intention to transform them into something physically and emotionally separated from their beginnings. The flags are first deconstructed, aged, torn apart and some are installations or sculpture pieces and others are reconstructed in collage form, photographed, printed on rice paper laminated to canvas, where I may finish off with a pen, paint, graphite and liquid polymer. This work provides a path to process my disbelief at the accelerating, heartbreaking madness following the U.S. 2016 election. This three-dimensional piece is housed in a rectangular wooden shadow box frame. Inside the frame, a collection of white, folded paper stars is arranged at the bottom, creating a layered, textured effect that implies stars fallen from their place. The stars are uniformly crafted, contributing to a clean, organized aesthetic, yet their placement suggests a symbolic unraveling. The plain white background within the frame draws focus to the paper stars, enhancing their prominence and the striking visual metaphor. This work evokes the image of stars falling from a flag, a poignant representation of states and unity being torn apart. The minimalist yet captivating composition emphasizes simplicity and repetition, while the arrangement of stars at the bottom of the frame underscores the theme of fragmentation and disarray. This artwork serves as a visual commentary on political and social division, employing minimalist elements to provoke thought and reflection about the state of unity.

A self-taught artist from Paterson, NJ, Alfonse Pagano was an assistant to Len Lye in the 1970s before attending The School of Visual Arts and the New School in NYC. His work has been shown at numerous galleries and The Laguna Gloria Art Museum in Austin, Texas, and is held in various collections at The Carnegie Mellon Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1990 Alfonse Pagano took up photography and co-authored a photojournalism book entitled DREADS. With an introduction from Alice Walker, the book published in 1999 by Artisan/Workman Press is in its eighth printing. A move from NYC to Newark, NJ in 2011 inadvertently led to the development of a new technique forging both disciplines of painting and photography. At the height of COVID, Alfonse and his partner Rowena bought a 40-foot trawler and are presently cruising in the tropics trying like hell to figure out how to make art on a boat.
