Frederick Douglass bust Sculpture

As artist in resident at a local foundry, I was asked to create a portrait sculpture of Frederick Douglass for a commissioned piece. The commission didn't work out, but as I did my research on the man, I realized this was a sculpture I needed to finish. It is a beautiful piece, and a testament to a man whose strength, tenacity and love changed the course of humanity. Where many of Douglass sculptures depict him as an older orator, I chose to sculpt him at one of the strongest points in his life where he was raw from injustice and determined to change it. I finished the piece in a deep rich patina, waxed and hand buffed every curve to a soft luster. He is mounted on a base of black marble. I've been told his spirit resonates in this piece...I hope you feel the same. There was only one of these pieces made.
