ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Beautiful chess set with each piece has been individually handcrafted and fired piece by piece in the raku kiln. ! NO BOARD! The set comes in a wooden box. Raku generally refers to a type of low-firing process that was inspired by traditional Japanese raku firing. Western-style raku usually involves removing pottery from the kiln while at bright red heat and placing it into containers with combustible materials. Once the materials ignite, the containers are closed. This produces an intense reduction atmosphere which affects the colors in glazes and clay bodies. The drastic thermal shock also produces cracking (known as crackling since it is deliberate). The original Japanese style of raku is an outgrowth from Buddhist influences in life and especially in the tea ceremony. Dimensions: Diameter 1" High 3" and 4"

Natalya Sevastyanova is a Los Angeles-based contemporary ceramic artist whose work bridges the untamed beauty of nature with modern design. Born and raised amid the vast and rugged landscapes of the Ural Mountains in Russia, Natalya draws profound inspiration from the natural world that surrounded her upbringing. Her artistic journey began as a muralist and animator, and she honed her creative sensibilities through an M.F.A. in Architecture Design at the Academy of Architecture and Arts in Yekaterinburg, Russia, and Santa Monica College, California. These experiences cultivated her eye for form, structure, and the interplay between art and environment. In 2013, Natalya turned her focus to clay, a medium that allowed her to express the organic beauty of nature in tactile and timeless forms. Over the years, her work has evolved from functional pottery and ceremonial teapots to intricate wall sculpture installations that transform spaces. Her installations have been featured in galleries, residential interiors, and commercial projects across Los Angeles and throughout the United States. Under her brand, SevaCeramics, her pieces have also gained international recognition for their ability to merge rustic elegance with contemporary aesthetics. Working from her private studio in Los Angeles, Natalya continues to explore the intersection of nature, art, and architecture, creating ceramic works that bring a sense of serenity and natural flow into modern spaces.
