I create one-of-a-kind pieces inspired by all forms of organic life. I enjoy blending genres and blurring the lines: are we in the plant, marine, animal, or microscopic world? The boundaries become blurred. My pieces are made using the coil-building technique, which allows me great freedom of form....

About the Artist

Julie Bergeron

France

Originally from Quebec, I have lived and worked in France since 2002, in Paris.

Trained as a graphic designer and illustrator, I felt a growing need for three-dimensional expression. It was through an illustration project on plates that I discovered ceramics. I learned the craft in the studio of artist Danielle Lescot, where I apprenticed from 2008 to 2012. Under her attentive guidance, I refined my technique through self-directed practice. Quickly, my passion for working with clay led me to dedicate all my time and creativity to it.

My ceramic work explores the forms of the living world through an organic and intuitive sculptural language. I create unique pieces that evoke plants, marine life, animals, or microscopic organisms, never seeking to represent any existing form. My sculptures emerge from a dialogue between observation of nature and imagination, in a space where the boundaries between kingdoms become fluid.

I enjoy designing pieces that seem to belong to an unknown ecosystem. Their volumes suggest growing organisms, cellular structures, seeds, corals, or primitive forms. This ambiguity is central to my approach: it opens a space for interpretation where each viewer is free to project their own references and construct their own narrative in front of the work.

I work exclusively with stoneware, hand-built using the coiling technique. This method allows me to freely construct volumes and accompany the gradual emergence of forms. I choose to leave the clay bare, unglazed, to preserve its mineral presence, texture, and ability to engage with the organic forms it carries.

My universe is also inspired by the scientific illustrations of Ernst Haeckel, whose drawings reveal the formal richness, complexity, and beauty of the living world.

My approach is primarily aesthetic and sensitive. I pay particular attention to rhythms, repetitions, tensions, and balances that run through each piece. I seek to create forms that find their rightness in the dialogue between tension and softness, complexity and simplicity, density and lightness.

Through these sculptures, I aim to bring forth presences that are both gentle and strange, familiar and enigmatic. I invite the viewer’s gaze to move freely, to sometimes recognize a form or a presence, and then to step back. Between evocation and abstraction, my pieces celebrate the organic richness of the living while allowing each person the freedom to project their own imagination.
