About the Artist

Marie Ackers

United Kingdom

Born in Paris, I am a French Sculptor living in the West Berkshire ( UK).

My work has been presented at a number of prestigious venues and international art fairs. Highlights include exhibiting alongside thirty of the UK’s leading sculptors at Sculpture by the Lakes, as well as having two works — The Gold Walking Cheetah and Small Sitting Cheetah — selected for exhibition by the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris.

My sculptures have also been shown internationally at the Affordable Art Fair in London, New York, and Hong Kong, introducing my work to collectors and audiences across Europe, the United States, and Asia.

My work begins with a single question — what is the essential presence of an animal, stripped of everything that is merely descriptive?

I work in clay first or plasteline , feeling for the underlying geometry of each subject — the architecture of weight.. From these early explorations, forms gradually resolve through initial work in resin and finally into bronze, in most cases, each stage revealing something the previous one could not yet say..

The horse has been at the centre of my practice for many years. It was through the horse that I found my sculptural language — geometric reduction, strong line, the power of what is left out as much as what remains. Those works are the most fully developed expression .

From there I have been expanding — into the big cats, the bears and bulls and the birds. Each new subject asks me to apply the same rigorous reduction to a completely different geometry of body and spirit. The cheetah demands tension and speed held in stillness. The bear demands mass and solidity. The bird demands lightness within structure. Each is a new test of the same essential question.
