Joanna Roszkowska

About the Artist

Joanna Roszkowska

Poland

Joanna Roszkowska graduate of the Faculty of Industrial Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. An artist consistently developing her own sculptural practice in the medium of ceramics. Since 2015, she has built a recognizable formal language based on tension, deformation, and the organic expressiveness of matter.

Her early series: Biomorphic (2015), Nomads (2016), Carbon (2017), and Entropy (2019), focused on biological structures and processes of growth and decay. Form was explored as an organism subject to transformation. This period established her interest in material as a carrier of energy and change.

Between 2020 and 2023, she created the series Intimate Structures, in which abstract sculpture became a space for reflection on corporeality and identity. Organic, sensual forms redefined the relationship between sculpture and bodily experience, while remaining beyond literal figuration.
Since 2024, she has been developing Body Language, a pivotal stage in her practice. The series is grounded in the idea that the body functions as an archive of experience, where tensions and emotions are inscribed within physical structure. Deformation, compression, and disruption of proportion are not formal experiments but a conscious sculptural language. Form transforms into a sign of tension and a trace of lived experience.

Roszkowska’s works operate within contemporary abstract-expressive sculpture, with a clear reference to corporeality. The body is not represented directly; instead, it undergoes transformation and reduction, becoming a structure of tension and a carrier of emotion. The dominance of black enhances the weight and autonomy of the object, eliminating decoration and directing attention to the material presence of form. The artist works in dialogue with matter. Clay is treated as a responsive medium that records gesture. Ceramics are often combined with metal and other materials, resulting in objects with strong physicality and a distinct spatial presence.

Joanna Roszkowska’s practice constitutes a consistently developed sculptural program in which form becomes a tool for examining the relationship between body and matter. The coherence of her formal language and the clear evolution of successive series establish a strong and recognizable artistic identity within contemporary sculpture.
