New Times Roman Sculpture

The concept for New Times Roman began with Michelangelo’s Pietà as the initial structure. Ronald McDonald replaces the Madonna figure and an obese, disfigured child replaces the Christ figure. The visual image is powerful, yet humorous; brightly colored robes cover “The Rodanna” in his traditional color palette. The entire surface of the piece has a plastic, resinous quality, meant to mimic the continuous, hard, yet smooth surface of the original marble. The visual relationship between “The Rodanna” and the child is intentionally disturbing. The facial structure and expression of Ronald McDonald are modeled after the Madonna to create a hybrid of the two. His/her gaze seems remorseful, yet loving and endearing, as if he/she is mourning the loss. In Michelangelo’s sculpture, The Madonna mourns her son, her own flesh and blood, whom she created for the sole purpose of being sacrificed. Likewise, “The Rodanna” is mourning the loss of a customer, one that he has created and pandered to at a young age for the sole purpose of lifelong allegiance. The Pietà is not only a depiction of the mourning Madonna, but also the celebration of the moment in which Catholic’s believe mankind was saved. New Times Roman is also a celebration, but a more sinister. “The Rodanna” sacrifice is necessary for his economic gain. New Times Roman addresses the battle between multi-national corporations and the people who will ultimately be most affected by them. It plays with the idea of the indoctrination of youth. At one point, every town, village, and city contained at least one church, while today almost every town, village or city in the world contains at least one McDonalds.
