ABOUT THE ARTWORK

When my neighbor children gave me a painting on a plate in 2002, I also wanted to be able to paint on crockery. I started with pottery plates. After a while I realized that I could not only paint on flat plates, but also on convex bowls. That was a very different dimension than a flat paper or plate. After a while I started experimenting with glass bowls. That made me enthusiastic, because in addition to the special shape of the bowl, the transparency of the glass was now also a challenge. I didn't want to stop anymore. I like to work on and with simple materials. I bought the glass bowls at stores that sell simple household items. This bowl, for example, is from Ikea. I paint on it with porcelain paint. The paint is fixed on the glass in the oven. You can wash the bowls by hand. I hope that the viewer will also be surprised by the new dimensions that a painting on a transparent bowl offers. That you, like me, are fascinated by the interplay of the inside with the outside. I expect you to keep watching to discover the surprises in the work. The work on the bowls is usually inspired by what I experience myself, or would like to experience. But I don't give the bowls titles. This way you can let your own imagination work every time. I do the same when I look at my own work.

A smile for you. I paint, draw and write. With that I make matter of my thoughts. And the matter brings new ideas; a smile maybe. I am interested in many topics. You can see that in my work. Some aspects: The origin of the land on which we live. The course of the rivers, polders, time. Color and composition – matter to play with. The human body. For example sitting, cycling, ….. The human mind. For example anger, contentment,… Ordinary things that are in and around us, such as cheese, air. Language. I look relatively uninhibited and move quite freely around existing patterns. I like to play. Ever since I can hold a pencil, I have drawn and painted. I also like to write and feel at home on stage. Although I like to go through life playfully, I also want to be serious about art at the same time. Sometimes I mainly make drawings on the i-pad for a while. Partly as an autonomous work, partly as illustrations for my writing (poetry and popular scientific work). Then again I paint a period on glass dishes and bowls. In doing so, I exploit the endlessness of the bowl shape by painting over the inside and the outside and making use of the transparency of the glass. Sometimes I alternate that with making paintings on canvas. Cloth is much stiffer than glass, you can't change that. But I do try to make the canvas somewhat transparent. What has always characterized my work is that I exploit the possibilities of technology. Sometimes that: using the patterns of the digital drawing program and the ability to copy and reuse images. Then again the bowl shape with its rim that you can paint over and that allows you to paint over the inside and the outside almost at the same time. Because I color the outer shape and make use of the transparency, this produces enigmatic images. My paintings on canvas are also puzzling: by painting scenes with transparent paint on top of each other, the viewer has a lot to see and fantasize about. If I think I've mastered a technique, the fun ends for me and I try something different. Until I have given up enough of the routine and perhaps often pick up the old technique again. Several years ago I started drawing on my iPad. Weird fantasies, or the ordinary things I see around me like flowers in a vase, my partner, or the garden. I like to exploit the technical possibilities: making use of the built-in patterns, reusing images I made earlier. And I keep discovering new possibilities. It's a wonderful game.
