ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This is a mixed media sculpture made from polymer clay, acrylic paint, felt, and pom poms. My artwork is based mainly on the idea of world-building. My practice started with different animal portraits and patterned backgrounds. I want to continue to make this world as real as possible by adding new layers to make the world more detailed. This new layer is a vivid plant series that can add to my unique world.

Through painting and sculpture, Los Angeles-based world builder Emily Veldman captures the narratives of her expansive fictional land. In her work, she creates imaginary safe spaces as a method of healing and coping with mental health. Her world is an escape from the harsh realities of adulthood. In the blank space on the canvas, she blocks out the responsibilities and anxieties of adulthood and replaces them with a colorful fantasy landscape. The stage is set with patterns, bright colors, and composition. By combining these elements the audience is transported to an altered Los Angeles where personified flowers and animals live and play.
