About The Artwork

All of my birdhouses are of the "Highest Quality Craftsmanship" and designed to be comfortable, SUPER SAFE environments for birds to raise their young. Built to last for years, I craft each birdhouse using cedar wood which is naturally weather and rot resistant. I used beautifully aged, reclaimed barn metal from old chicken coops and barns that have been dismantled and re-purposed. I weave the barn metal for an "art gallery" look but more importantly to provide necessary ventilation in warm weather and drainage in freezing weather to prevent splitting. There is a removable round disc on the back of each birdhouse to make fall clean out easy. The entry holes are sized to attract bluebirds, wrens, chickadees, and other eastern and western song birds.

Mike Merritt's art is an expression of his love for wood, nature and fine craftsmanship. Born in Boston and raised in Chicago, Mike moved to Colorado in 1984 where he worked as a carpenter. In 1990, Mike moved to the Florida Keys and began what would become his life-long passion and profession - creating wonderful works of art with wood. Often inspired by his love for re-using materials, his art is diverse. He has delighted collectors with everything from his Flying Bird House series - made using old barn metal roofs and cedar - to a collection of classically inspired award-winning three legged tables that he aptly named, (Irresis-Tables). Mike's work has been featured in exhibitions and in numerous galleries, museums, and cultural centers throughout the Southeast. His art can be found in private collections, fine gift shops, and in retail and online stores for birding and nature enthusiasts throughout the country. Today, Mike lives in the quaint town of Travelers Rest, SC near the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. His birdhouse business has grown into a full time operation and he continues to design and create finely crafted works of art with wood. His awards include first place in the Arts Council of Henderson County NC Juried Art show, "Wood", honorable mention for his Birdhouse Designs in the Saluda Arts Festival, Saluda, NC, and a merit award from the Belton Center for the Arts in Belton, SC.
