About the Artist

George Dragomir

Romania

My art emerges directly from my own experience of oppression and displacement. I have always been interested in the dynamics between the notion of personal narrative, on the one hand, and generic concepts such as human nature, on the other. Two questions are always at the forefront of my consciousness: “What does it mean to be human?” and “What makes an event historical?” Violence and vulnerability, desire and refusal/rejection, stability and discontinuity, the conflict between reality and imagination and the desperate and often failed attempts to make sense of events are all fundamental concerns and inevitable themes. I also constantly probe the relationship between the material and the experiential to reflect on the nature and role of sculpture and of artwork’s relationship with its surrounding environment. To that extent, in my more recent work I draw on my experience with decorativism to subvert a purely aesthetic function of art and to question totalizing cultural and historical narratives
