Riven 5 continues along the path to more organic and natural finishes and surfaces for the pieces. This was thrown on a wheel from heavily grogged dark clay using a specially developed technique. The smooth curves invite the viewer to touch it, but the heavy grog penetrating the surface makes handling the piece a very rough experience. I love the contrast of the smooth and the rough, the invitation to touch, and the tactile experience of doing so. The tiny hole invites the viewer to explore further.

With every time that I touch clay, it responds, but it also has a mind of its own. I love to listen to the clay, and to help it become the form it 'wants'. The resulting art piece is a record of the conversation with the clay. These are more than just happy accidents; my works are the result of carefully 'listening' to the clay, and guiding it to form. My explorations are focused on form, and comprise several series or veins of exploration. I am educated in ceramics from both the technological standpoint (BS, MS, and PhD in Ceramic/Materials Engineering/Science) and from the artistic standpoint (Master Classes, Workshops). This combined background provides me with great freedom in exploring form to the fullest capability of the clay.
