About The Artwork

I cannot help being impressed by the incredible diversity of natural life around my Midwest home. Insects form a major portion and some lay their eggs on caterpillars so the hatchlings will have food when they emerge. The title is adapted from the word "roly-poly". I have always enjoyed the work of isolate or "folk" artists, whose imagery and subject matter seem at times unfathomable. Their drive to create can seem as inevitable as it is strange. While I am not unschooled, I try to keep the parameters of my work open and edit as little as possible. I work as much from the material towards an emergent subject matter, rather than manipulate the material towards a predetermined content structure. I enjoy the surprise that attends a work's evolution. Rolyheads is made of two joined and painted black walnut branches with forks that terminate in turned elm spheres. The head forms are catalpa and sprout shocks of hair-like weed trimmer line. A linear blue pattern seems to emanate from where the spheres are attached and meanders up the forks. The red paint contains prismatic flecks that sparkle and the black spheres are dyed and lacquered.

Much of my practice includes collecting and preparing wood from local trees. When I began this process years ago, the material came from friends or neighbors who cut down trees and offered the wood to me. Now I have many trees on my property that may drop large branches. Most require careful and regular pruning. Recently I was forced to take down a sugar maple that was rotting from the inside out. This provided me with a considerable amount material that is dense and quite excellent. It also provided much of the material used to make “Red Fence.” The scroll form in the piece was made with wood I saved from pruning pear trees some years ago. I’d like to think that my work functions like poetry, except it uses forms instead of words to evoke thoughts and feelings that lie deep and barely realized.
