SURF/ACE was created for a surf themed joint show at #Hashtag Gallery in 2014. The idea behind the piece was a play on words with both surfing, and the idea that the word surface was in fact making up the surface of the piece itself. "My artwork focus is multifaceted. Having been schooled formally in graphic design, I have a fondness for clean, crisp lines, typography, and flat colour. This side of my artwork results in digital illustration, and text based art. On the flip side, because of that training, and large amount of time spent on the computer, it’s forced me away from that, to create handmade objects free from computer screens. Over the past few years my art has been shifting from digital illustration, to collage, to crafting using upcycled materials such as recycled canvas, magazines, and clothing. Getting away from machines has resulted in art that has a more direct human touch, and feel to it which I find holds a different kind of energy for the viewer. With so much waste in the world, upcycling materials when possible is important in my practice to give new life to objects in a unique way. I feel like if there’s a way to make use of those materials at least in part, it should be encouraged, so I do. The idea of seeing the same thing in more than one way is also intriguing to me, and double meanings play a role in much of my work. The combination of art and design is also something I experiment with regularly. Pattern, repetition, colour theory, and typography play a large part in my art, and help give a unified feel to the pieces. I’ve also been exploring the use of neon lighting which uses computer generated design elements, and combines them with a physical, handmade product."
