About The Artwork

Shahr-e farang is an ocher mask with its mouth stuffed with two Barbie dolls. To this day, the Barbie serves as a symbol of colonial and postcolonial supremacy and domination, attempting to spread a global ideal of beauty that propagates a restrictive, monochromatic image of womanhood. The title shahr-e farang translates to "European city" and was the Persian name for the mobile peep show boxes from the colonial era. These ornate boxes on wheels were numerous in colonial empires. They were a photographic box that displayed images of the European lifestyle in order to embed the culture of the colonialists in local society. Although the Persian Empire was not an official colony, the Shah of Persia at the time loved Parisian culture. He not only brought ballet tutus from Paris for his numerous wives, but also those showcases that often contained photographs of women.
