About The Artwork

Statement of Work: Simplicity in Motion #4 - Constellation Since the beginning of time, creatures have looked to the sky for inspiration, guidance and collective belief. Regardless of intention, we are all moving on one path with an endless number of unique individual outcomes. As a leaf contributes to the collective strength of a tree; a tree offers its individual value to a forrest; the forrest joins its purpose to the vital signs dc earth. Having selected a piece of yew that was hewn from the topmost section of trunk directly below the first split of the boughs, Adam sought to accentuate the unique grain pattern found at this specific part of the tree. One organism. Multiple branches. One purpose. Many paths towards the light. Collective strength. Work technical description: Simplicity in Motion #4 - Constellation Being the first of its type within the series, Adam was able to use existing technical knowledge and comfortably transfer to work in this piece. Layout and initial router cuts took approximately 12 hours. Making the cuts with a Router and radius cutters decreased the overall production time. The need to create clean 'cuts' was heighten as the ripples were designed to be perfectly circular. Shaping and refining with hand rasps and files took a further 4-6hours. The repetitive process of hand sanding (320grit), oiling and polishing took a further 35-40hours. This final stage is extremely relevant to remove any visual blemishes creating in the cutting process; any inconsistency which is detectable by touch only; and to ensure the final finish had a radiant lustre without it being shiny. A two stage process was employed to reduce potential cracking; stabilise and strengthen the wood and create the desired finish. Generously applying boiled linseed oil with a spray bottle and leaving it to soak overnight would force the oil to penetrate deeper and potentially saturate the wood. Any excess was removed the following day with a fine abrasive pad. This process was repeated 4 times until the absorption had noticeably diminished. The final finish was created by repetitively applying boiled linseed oil with a non absorbent abrasion pad and wiping off any residual oil. There is an indescribable joy of applying any finishing oil for the first time to a new piece. The enhancement in radiance and depth of the detail is truly stunning and worth experiencing personally in order to appreciate it
