About The Artwork

In the “The Seventh Seal”, the 1957 film by Ingmar Bergman, the medieval and disillusioned knight Antonius Block challanges Death to a chess match so he can try to put off what is inevitable: this trick will become the chance to give a new spiritual allure to his own life, and build a new identity, almost lost in war. "The Knight Antonius Block" is part of the series "Modern Knights in (not-just-shining) armour." 6 half-length sculptures for 6 classic literary Knights revisited—modern knights embarking on epic quests: the remains of the whole armour hint at the human presence inside, and become sign of a universal Quest for identity. So the armour points at the void underneath, which needs filling and building. Ariosto's knights are all wandering in search for someone or something; Cervantes' Don Quixote in his stupor of chivalric delusion fights within himself and his own demons; the warrior ghost of King Hamlet appears to his hesitant son, the Prince of Denmark... They all unfold a spiritual quality in their quests, the same as shown in the “Tao Tê Ching”, by Lao-Tzu (VI-III BCE). Hear this out, about void and letting go: “Thirty spokes share the wheel's hub; (but) it is the center hole that makes it useful. /Shape clay into a vessel; still, it is the space within that makes it useful. /Cut doors and windows for a room; it is the holes ...” Here too, the void. Besides, and by analogy, the relic of their armours also refers to the hard cover page of the classic books these knights come from. What's in the inside gives meaning to both armour and cover page. And the sound: knocking on the armour echoes with the human presence, just like leafing through books make them resonate, and come to life as physical objects. As in Italo Calvino's reading, the non-existent Knight is an “empty armour which reverberates through the metal”, with noone inside. Now, check this out too, about duality and wholeness: “You can hear the sound of two hands when they clap together,” said the Zen Master. “Now show me the sound of one hand.”

SCULPTURE TELLS RIVETING STORIES. Artworks tell stories with a physical presence, one linked to Space&Time, one hinted at by the patron, one in the artist’s interpretation--and the materials have their saying too. II The path we choose is to keep track of significant meaning over time, sharing values through a creative narrative. How we do it? Solid planning, in-depth materials research, lateral thinking, and rivets will nail inspiration to its core.
