This sculpture has been inspired by an ongoing discussion, in both philosophy and in many religious practices, on the subject of self. When do we become aware of 'self'? What is the true 'I'? We certainly have little or no sense of self when we are asleep, do we obtain it back when we wake up? We a...

About the Artist

Maksim Kuznetcov

Australia

I am a Sydney-based figurative representational sculptor whose practice centres on the exploration of human emotion, existential questions, and the blurred boundaries between self and world. Working primarily in sculpture — through modelling in water-based and oil-based clays, mould making and casting in bronze, epoxy, plaster — I translate fleeting emotional and spiritual states into tangible, sometimes abstracted figurative forms. My techniques is predominantly based on modelling from life or from anatomical studies of drawings I made from live models. I control surfaces and often use colour on my sculptures to amplify psychological depth.
Inspirations stem from the human condition: the tension between joy and suffering, the illusion of self, the legacy of religion versus humanism, and the expressive power of the body. I draw from art historical references such as Francis Bacon and Eadweard Muybridge, alongside philosophical and meditative inquiry into consciousness and connection.
My intent is to create works that invite viewers to meet and sometimes to confront their own emotional journeys — from birth to death, isolation to unity — and to find resonance in the beauty and fragility of lived experience. Through sculpture, I seek to make the intangible inner world to be visible, fostering moments of recognition, contemplation, and connection.
