About The Artwork

2. Thuhlo – giraffe in Setswana ( One of the many languages in South Africa) Thuhlo the Giraffe lives in a beautiful private game reserve somewhere in the bushveld of SA. He has an abundance of beautiful open fields to wonder, explore and forage. He has spontaneously developed an acquired taste for a good South African breakfast. At first he would just walk past the restaurant at breakfast time, sniffing all the delicious aromas coming from the kitchen. At some point he could not resist sticking his head through the restaurant windows and stealing food from diners plates, to the amusement of everyone around. Thuhlo is quite a colorful chap! He became a regular visitor at breakfast time and at some point determined that he had a preference for fried eggs sunny side up! Since that day he would only aim for plates with fried eggs on them. Feeding wild animals is not encouraged by the game lodge so restaurant goers are warned to keep their windows closed while having breakfast. Every now and then however someone breaks the rules and lets Thuhlo have his egg and eat it! The story of Thuhlo the fried egg eating giraffe was the inspiration behind my sculpted beeswax candle. Some of the markings on his body has eggs painted on them. The motto here is to be more like Thuhlo. This story is loosely based on true facts.

Cat de Lange is an entrepreneur, qualified designer and visual artist who is from South Africa, a country with a tumultuous yet rich multi cultural history. She draws inspiration from her everyday life, thoughts and surroundings, stories and struggles, interesting people and diverse cultures, encounters, experiences and emotions, fads and feelings, facts, fantasy and fiction. In some of her work she aspires to visually comment on current local and global issues that she feels strongly about, to create awareness and entice people to think and possibly open up broader conversation about these matters. Cat has two serious potentially deadly and/or debilitating diseases Lupus SLE and Dermatomyositis which currently has no cure, however she decides not to dwell on that. Her art is her medicine, outlet and escape where she can be Alice in wonderland or Dorothy of to find the wonderful wizard of Oz. Much of her work is fun and whimsical to lighten moods and rooms and heal wounds. As a child she was fascinated with the tiny books of Beatrix Potter and from there the love for rabbits with character and personality formed. She believes each rabbit whispers their name to her while busy sculpting them. Cat mainly focusses on sculpting using mostly clay, beeswax or cement and paint. She does not however bind herself to one specific medium or style if she is in the mood to try out something new. She mostly makes one of a kind pieces but enquiries on sold pieces and commissions are more than welcome. Artist Statement Although I am from European decent I was born and raised in South Africa, therefore my home will always be in Africa. I hope to capture a piece of magic from my colourful country in each of my works of art. What is so special about Africa you might ask? Let me tell you why: There's a highway of stars across the heavens There's a whispering song of the wind in the grass There's a rolling thunder across the Savanna A hope and a dream at the edge of the sky And your life is a story like the wind Your life is a story like the wind But I'm searching for a great heart to stand me by Underneath the African sky, a great heart to stand me by I'm searching for the spirit of the great heart to hold and keep me by I'm searching for the spirit of the great heart under African skies Johnny Clegg & Savuka
