This sculpture was inspired from the paintings die Toteninsel from Arnold Böcklin 1880 -1886. The theme is an island that is very secluded, faraway and mysterious. This sculpture is an early work created in the year 1989. The translation of title from the German language is, the island of the dead. This work is created in wood, where diverse forms are brought together in a poetic constellation, as an abstract impression of an island. The original painting has a distinct lost and secluded atmosphere. The forms are individually gilded and painted. Each form has been treated with the gesso technique, so that the surfaces can be painted or gilded with 22 carat gold leaf or silver leaf. The base of the sculpture has a dark patina created through the oxidized silver leaf. Due to the fact that wood is a natural product the patina can change through time.

Dolores Flores is an interdisciplnary artist, poet and musician who lives and works in Berlin Germany. She is of Mexican, American, German decent, born in Berlin Germany. She grew up in Northern California from 1965 -1983, then returned to Berlin. Since then she has created a wide range of artistic work. Sculpture , Installation, poetry-Text Reliefs - Musical Audio - Visual room installation, luminescent Photo object boxes and Videos. The theme in all of these works is narrative and contemplative. Exploring issues of consciousness, society in our time, the cycle of life, transiency and personal space. The sculptural work is polychromatic created in wood : carved, assembled, gilded and painted. Uniting abstract form and a refined structure. The luminescent object boxes are a combination of paper sculpture and photography. Scenes are created with the paper figures titled "the beer people". These figures are all originals made out of the valueless material of tissue paper drop catchers. In Germany the "tropfenfanger" is a tradition, it is a tissue paper ring that is attached to the bottom of a beer glass to absorb the foam drippings. Dolores created these figures playfully many years ago in an old Berliner beer bar, as a sculptor she was found this fragile tissue paper very interesting and at that moment the "beer people" came to life. Each figure is torn and folded into form, made out of one single paper tissue drop catcher. The only additional component is the tooth pick glued to the back side for stabilization. There are over 8000 figures that have been created for diverse installations, photography, object boxes and videos up to the moment. These figures represent a hopeful, optimistic and idealistic society, with gender equality. They are searching for new solutions, propagating the importance of the moment, individuality and freedom of thought. These figures are full of physical expression and originality. In this series of works there are ever present messages, statements excerpts from her songs and poems that are translated into in the binary number code. This component represents our digital and computerized era. The figures the "beer people" function as a playful expedient, where the narrative aspect combined with the philosophy that art can be seen as a catalyst for social interaction and understanding, is a fundamental aspect in these of works.
