VOLANS – ‘Constellation Created by Petrus Plancius’ The Volans constellation first appeared in 1597 on a 35 centimeter diameter celestial globe. That is how astronomers mapped the visual stars back then. This Pyrophyllite stone is composed of aluminum silicate hydroxides and has many flakes of pyrite in it. They shine like stars. This block was sent to me from a collector in Japan. He wanted to see what I could create using a stone from his country.
