"Wally" is a vessel from my Voyage Project. Named in tribute to Luca Bassani, the founder of Wally Yachts. His vessels are aesthetically stunning and mechanically revolutionary. Due to their “functionality” some may say they are not works of art, but sailing one must be thrilling; a rare domain in the human experience. The reason I pay tribute to Mr. Bassani is not just because of his wherewithal to manifest a passion into an object, but his familial gesture to name a company based on his children’s favorite cartoon – keeping alive that childhood revelry in the human spirit. Voyage Project is an interactive/participatory art project. I make sculptural vessels with a message embedded in their surface. The vessels are made available for purchase through brick & mortar, and virtual galleries. Occasionally, I will release a vessel to the general public; document the initial encounter, then as I receive notifications of their journeys from around the world I post updates to my website. To view video/pictures of prior releases, and encounters, please visit my website - www.FrancisSileo.com - and look at the details of the following vessels: "Fatima," "Murdoch," "Liberty," "Sophia," "Gewgaw," and "Dylan." With this project I am exploring multiple facets of the human experience: the value we place on objects; emotional attachment to objects and their impact on people; an examination of time and space; the fleeting time of our existence on this planet and a contemplation of the things we will leave behind; the interplay between the virtual and real worlds; taking art from a static, observational experience, to a dynamic, visceral engagement; our willingness to relate with people that we have no prior knowledge of; creating a thread to share our common humanity and create moments of wonder in our day. By purchasing this vessel, you become a patron of the project. But, if you purchase this vessel, break the seal on its surface and give it away, you become more than a patron, you become a participant, attaining empathy with the artist in experiencing the act of giving away a valued object. Each vessel is crafted out of wood and enrobed in multiple layers of epoxy resin, sandwiching layers of paint, fabric, and other materials together, bringing a unique personality to every sculpture. The final coatings are several layers of marine grade, UV resistant varnish. Each sculpture is signed, numbered and dated, and comes with a display base. Thank you for reading about my project. I wish you well on your personal journey, and may your days be filled with wonderment.
