I approached the discovery of this form on paper by drawing from a variety of subtle sources of inspiration; i.e., geometric concepts and organic architectural solutions, which were integrated into the evolutionary process of my work. While the sketch was coming into form on paper did I realize it had similarities to a bird.

Carved from 2 pieces of Western Red Cedar and waxed, this wall hanging form will add charm and elegance to a chosen area. It hangs on a normal small wall nail (angle the nail head up slightly for added strength). The concavity begins its run from the tail as an edge, all the way up the left side finishing in the "head" area as the complex concave/convex compound surface (which was the trickiest surface to complete). The "neck" and "shoulder" meet with a clean corner conjoining the two convex surfaces (another tricky part to work). The glue joing where the two pieces meet is visible on the tapered front body which displays the surace smoothness in its ring. The head moves away from the wall in the back providing extra depth and movement to the piece.

The quiet evening lake,
Deep sounds of silence,
Shattered by a drop of water

Art website: mikesasaki.com I was born in Toronto, Canada. I graduated from the Bachelor of Design Honours program at York University / Sheridan College in 2005. I lived in Tokyo, Japan for 5 years where I was immersed in traditional and modern Japanese culture. The martial arts philosophies have strengthened the peaceful aspects of my sculpture. In my search for a hands-on approach to life and work, I had found sculpting in wood like an epiphany. I am currently living in Metro Vancouver and focusing on the metaphysical line of wood sculptures. Art website: mikesasaki.com
