As an analog collage artist, my creative journey is a celebration of the tangible and the ephemeral, fusing elements of the mechanical and biomorphic into a harmonious visual symphony. Each hand crafted piece represents an exploration of the relationships between form and design. The juxtaposition of shapes, colors and textures on the page directs the viewer’s eye in a rhythm that creates a visual tension and impact. Typefaces play a significant role in my collage art, adding an aspect of storytelling to each composition. Letters, numbers or single random words intertwine with the images, forming a mysterious dialogue between the written word and visual art. My source material consists of fashion magazines, vintage editorials, architectural magazines, junk mail and any interesting piece of paper. By blending these elements, my collages remind us of the fragmented, chaotic world in which we live and try to communicate and connect with each other. My artistic inspiration stems from the works of David Carson, Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Heinecken. For me, all of these artists have brilliantly blended images, color, texture and typeface into impactful works of art. Choosing to work with analog collage is a deliberate decision. The tactile nature of physically cutting and assembling paper materials allows me to immerse myself in the creative process deeply. As I hand-select, cut, tear and arrange each element, a symbiotic relationship is formed between the materials themselves, reinforcing the theme of interconnectedness that is central to my artwork. This tangible interaction with the medium also imbues the finished pieces with a unique sense of authenticity and originality. In essence, my analog collage art is an expression of my feelings about the tenuousness and frailty of our ability to connect. It invites viewers to engage in a dialogue about the transformative power of connecting and listening to each other.

James Wimberg was born and raised in Connecticut, USA. As a child he loved art and was always drawing in sketchbooks. His interest in photography began during high school with “photo safaris” around his hometown of Old Lyme. Taking pictures of collapsing barns, moody landscapes and interesting things in nature helped him develop his eye for light and composition. After college Jim moved to Los Angeles to pursue commercial and fine art photography. Jim’s artistic influences include: Robert Rauschenberg, David Carson, Frank Ockenfels 3, Robert Heinecken, Jerry Uelsmann and Man Ray. “I am inspired by the fragmented, textural and layered images as seen in the mixed media works of Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Ockenfels 3 and Robert Heinecken. In addition to these artists, I’m drawn to the use of type in the work of David Carson’s collages. The combination of these ingredients is the jumping off point for my work." "In my ongoing photography series Graffiti Train, I shoot double exposures on outdated film using a low-tech, toy camera with a plastic lens. The results are always unknown until the film comes back from the lab. I love the layering of colors, paint strokes and type in the images. They are like abstract paintings with incredible depth and mysterious meanings. The current series of collages I’m working on was born out of a strong desire to create during COVID19 isolation in the spring of 2021. I had just purchased David Carson’s book “nu collage.001” and was struck by his beautiful collage work. His work became a source of inspiration for me and remains so to this day. Some of the images in my collages are my photography, but most are ripped from magazines."
