About The Artwork

Lockdown Limbo Collages. These collages were created during the first UK lockdown and were a reaction to the events unfurling; witnessed through the daily news bulletins. I used my imaginary character 'Dot' (with a square head), as a fictional Queen in a metaphorical kingdom. Making use of an eclectic range of magazines, newspapers, wallpapers and my own personal photographs, I combined these images with colours, paint, ink, lines and text to parody world events; in particular world leaders and their reactions and consequent handling of the global pandemic. The works are a form of storytelling that on the surface appear colourfully aesthetic and (even) amusing, however, on closer inspection, contain darker undertones. They are critiquing people in power; looking at how their decisions have massive repercussions on other people's lives. Furthermore, the collages question the absurdity of high fashion, religious art and capitalism - and how redundant they became in the face of Covid 19. The imaginary queen has an imaginary king; together they become more extreme in their behaviour, transforming into saints, muppets, lions, Tom Cruise, nurse Ratchett, Gwyneth Paltrow, Damien Hirst, Joseph Beuys, Donald Trump, Rauschenberg, Jeff Koons, Derek Jarman, Anselm Keifer, pickled rats, rubber fetishists and Jesus. They wear Gucci, worship the Karma Sutra and Ned Kelly. The titles of the collages are integral; a contemporary morality tale of powers abused, ignorance and the futility of high fashion, designer labels and the art market. Deborah Gardner.

For over thirty years I have been making art: combining colour, line, shape, texture, and words. I am influenced and inspired by myriads of things – conversations, books, films, music, TV, history, politics, religion, newspapers, places, people, relationships, feelings, and memories. For me, the process of making is key – I mix materials and mediums; weaving colours, symbols, patterns, and text - tearing, cutting reassembling, gluing, painting, drawing, writing – (getting dirty). This for me is a type of alchemy; an attempt to create order from chaos. I am trying to make sense of - and to capture small moments of being. All my work is a form of storytelling – the square motif I use in my work is called Dot and acts as a cipher – my artistic alter-ego, enabling me to spin almost abstract narratives. All my images – (large or small), are pictorial metaphors that on the surface look aesthetically pleasing yet on closer inspection expose something darker; luminous distractions that conceal as many truths as lies.
