About The Artwork

Narcissists are intrinsic parasites. They prey on the pure of heart, latching onto their empathy and feeding off their emotional investment. They weave into the lives of those unfortunate enough to cross their path, intricately tangling their victims into a world of selfishness, power, and control. The narcissist sees others as nothing more than a supply—a source of the adoration, attention, and love they are incapable of genuinely reciprocating. They are shameless in nature, caring only for their blossoming facade of growth and beauty at the expense of their victims, which die a slow and painful death from the inside out. This concept is depicted by the narcissus flower, representing the narcissist, growing and flourishing through every orifice of the blistered and dying human heart, which represents the genuine empathic souls that fall victim to their deceit and self-indulgence.

Anna Mikhaela Reyes is a contemporary artist based in Denton, Texas. After receiving her BFA in Drawing and Painting from Kennesaw State University, Anna focused her practice on the use of charcoal, watercolor, and colored pencil to elevate the romanticism of botany and the human figure. Anna's work explores themes in psychology, the flux of personal vulnerabilities, and the elusiveness of interpersonal connection. Common to her work is obscure symbolism as well as the intertwining elements of romance and melancholy—an acceptance that the most beautiful things in life are often bittersweet.
