ABOUT THE ARTWORK

As a 'born and bred' Londoner I find the local urban landscape a constant source of inspiration. In particular I am drawn to the River Thames, with its ever changing moods and light. This work is one of a series based upon the tidal parts of the river in London. This work looks East up-river, and contrasts the older architecture along the river (the 17th Century Queens House, the old Power Station and the victorian foot tunnel entrance) with the newer apartment blocks being developed along the river. London is constantly evoloving and this contrast between the old and the new is something that always fascinates me. These urban landscapes are produced on good quality paper using a mix of Acrylic paint, Graphite and Indian Ink. The work is developed slowly over a period of weeks. I draw 'on the spot' in my sketchbook, returning each day to draw and redraw the subject, and then returning to my studio to develop the work using the information gleaned in that day's drawing. I work these urban landscapes in monochrome because I enjoy the expressive qualities of black and white images.

In 2004 I resigned from my job in finance to pursue a career as an artist. I studied full time for four years at the Heatherley School of Fine Art, a leading independent art school, successfully completing a Diploma in Portraiture (with a portfolio that was highly commended by the Royal Society of Portrait Painters) and a one year post diploma portraiture course. I now work full time from a studio in South East London. The emphasis on rigorous observation instilled at Heatherleys continues to inform my work, which is predominately representative. I enjoy exploring different media and working across a wide range of subjects, including still life, portraiture and the London urban landscape. My work has been shown in numerous national exhibitions and is included in several private collections.
