About The Artwork

This portrait shows Belgian surrealist painter Magritte as a projection of what is known in Jungian psychology as the archetype of the Wise Old Man or the Senex who is the illuminator, the preceptor and teacher, a psychopomp (conductor of souls), a mentor. It’s seen as an indication of the Self in the individuation process. The use of the statement obviously refers to Magritte’s well-known painting "Ceci n'est pas une pipe”. This helps to emphasize that the man portrayed is not Magritte but a representation of the archetype described above. Golden acrylic paint was used to give the subject a divine aura to show him as a superior being.

I'm a Peruvian artist based in Malaga, Spain. When my body of work is appreciated as a whole, it is possible to realize that despite the different topics covered and the different techniques and media used (oils, charcoal, graphite, pastel chalks, ink, acrylics) there is a common factor that is realistic representation of images. This being quite obvious in my early works of social realism, the realist treatment in surrealist paintings as well as in mythical-symbolic works becomes an essential tool to help these subjects get out of an abstract world and thus gain legitimation as something real that exists. On the other hand, the image of the woman has a symbolic meaning. She is the link between the conscious world and the inner world of the unconscious both in surrealist works and in portraits immersed in darkness. The latter, like the other portraits in general, are projections in which archetypal ideas of psychic entities are released, that is, they are symbolic portraits.
