Domestic strawberry - Limited Edition of 10 Print

A month ago I was eating the first strawberry from our garden and comparing it with a wild strawberry. We have bred them for size at the expense of taste. That is, they are much bigger mainly because they are more watery. But they are nonetheless lovely. And strange. . . it is quite unusual to have the seeds on the outside of the attractant (the fruit pulp) for the dispersing animal. Most other plants that rely on animals put the seeds inside the fruit. The seeds of strawberry have thick seed coats to protect them as they move through the acids of an animal's stomach. If everything works out for the plant, the seeds end up intact and far from the mother, deposited in a pile of feces.
