ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I’m attracted to beautiful old buildings that are in a current state of neglect and disrepair and the stories they tell. I’m interested in the social identity and social status we derive from our structures and the stuff inside them. I’m interested in the disposable nature of buildings in the United States. I’m interested in the entropy that often happens to the physical structure. I’m interested in the “ghosts of the house” that linger in the minds of the occupants long after they have moved on to other places. I’m interested in how people live their lives when out of the public eye and what goes on in their heads when the garage door slides to a close at the end of the day and no one is watching. “When I walk past the tiny houses on our street, I wonder about the stories inside them. I wonder hard because houses must have walls and rooftops for a reason. My only query is the windows. Why do they have windows? Is it to let a glimpse of the world in? Or for us to see out?” Markus Zusak, Fighting Ruben Wolfe

Artist Statement- My artwork takes you to imaginary worlds that are yet to be fully explored. Through my two and three-dimensional works, I explore the struggles and beauty of being human while providing glimpses into our cultural landscape, myths, and the human psyche. I draw inspiration from my love for antique items, furniture, clothing, architecture, and vintage photographs. My sensitivity to nature, color, and light also influences my work. I use a combination of painting, collage, sculpture, and photography to connect the past, present, and future. My pieces incorporate a range of mediums, including oil and acrylic paints, ink drawings, hand-marbled papers, cast-off domestic objects, fabric, vintage portraits, and contemporary digital photographs. Bio- Cynthia Wagner is a multidisciplinary artist interested in the complex internal landscapes of the human experience and the objects that hold human stories in their physical forms. Her work blends several artistic practices, including painting, collage, sculpture, and photography. Wagner earned a BFA in Painting from the Herron School of Art and Design, Indiana University Indianapolis. Her work has been exhibited across the Southeast, most recently a solo exhibition at the Gadsden Museum of Art.
