About The Artwork

In a forgotten corner of Surrey there is a ruined priory called Ankerwycke. It has been a mystical place for a very long time, centred on a yew tree thousands of years old which is still used in rituals today. It is surrounded by a complex ruined system of channels and fishponds which are overgrown and stagnant, and this painting involved wading into one of them. It was made as part of a body of work (Runnymede Ghosts) which was part of the Magna Carta 800 celebrations in 2015. The paintings all celebrated the landscape in which Magna Carta was sealed and emphasised areas which still had strong, visible traces of the medieval world. It is a fascinating set of paintings which shows my increasing interest in depicting time (and specifically contrasting the fleeting with the near eternal) and this painting communicates that most strongly. Time in this painting seems tangible; it is so thick you could chew it.

Alan is an artist based in Surrey. From his studio in Staines-upon-Thames, he paints landscapes, investigates whatever catches his attention and is currently prototyping some top secret & beautiful things. He trained at Farnham and has shown in many open and group shows throughout London and the South East, has had one major solo show and has been artist in residence for a manor house in Buckinghamshire. His work is in many private collections. “A high proportion of my work is the local landscape. Initially this was nothing but a combination of convenience and a long term fascination with the depiction of space, but as I have dug deeper it has begun to act as a proxy for more personal ideas.”
