About The Artwork

Apples are so common that we often forget to actually look at how beautiful they are! Each one is unique and the colors are brilliant. I painted this from a bunch of apples strewn casually across a table. I wanted a very contemporary view of a still life, so I chose this aerial view which emphasizes the shapes and colors more than subject. The painting is in an abstracted impressionist style, with loose brushwork, thick and thin paint and linear drawing elements. My muse was, of course, Cezanne, with his emphasis on form and color planes. The painting is acrylic on canvas which has been attached to a treated birch wood panel for stability. The panel is stained dark walnut and is 3/4 inch thick. The painting could be hung "as is" but it would look great framed.

I was once traveling with a close friend, photographing everything in sight, as any tourist does. I asked him, "Don't you want to take any photos?" He answered, "I like to remember things in my own way." What a profound statement - and one that I take seriously when I paint. My art is about remembering things . . . in my own way . . . and "disremembering" everything else. A native of Fort Worth, Texas, my artistic career began at an early age when I began painting with my mother on Sunday afternoons. Surrounded by art books, paintings and sculpture at home, I always knew I wanted to be a painter.
